Nils is not &#8216;hardcore technical&#8217;!<\/p>\n<p>The Library laboratory is a project &#8211; website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblab.no\/\">http:\/\/www.biblab.no\/<\/a> &#8211; in Norwegian. It has been running for 4 years, funded by Nowegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority (ALM). Initialised by Thomas Brevik &#8211; about connecting people in Norway who had an interest in libraries and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Library laboratory supports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>net-based meeting places\n<ul>\n<li>blog<\/li>\n<li>wiki (including terminology explanations etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>physical meetings &#8211; annual workshops attended by people from across library sector (public, academic, specialist)<\/li>\n<li>projects\/prototype development\n<ul>\n<li>guidance<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;micro-funding&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Established network of enthusiasts<\/li>\n<li>Intitiated other projects financed by ALM (including &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bibpode.no\/blogg\/\">Pode<\/a>&#8216;)<\/li>\n<li>Now buidling infrastructured to support existing projects<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Open Library&#8217; provides a solution for merging data from system providers, librarians and library users<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The &#8216;open library&#8217; system is now up and running and being tested with data from the Oslo Public Library (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bibpode.no\/blogg\/\">Pode Project<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>SWOT analysis of the library laboratory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Strengths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Engaged a passionate group<\/li>\n<li>Technological infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Weaknesses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small community scattered across many environments<\/li>\n<li>Lack of resources to dedicate time to system development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Opportunities<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National library invests in new union catalogue system &#8211; will require a rethink of how library data is managed &#8211; may be able to build on work already done for &#8216;open library&#8217; &#8211; opportunity to work with National Library<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Threats<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many library systems with different interests in Norway<\/li>\n<li>Lack of identifiers &#8211; and each community\/system has it&#8217;s own identifiers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Q: What are you lacking when it comes to identifiers?<\/p>\n<p>A: e.g. no identifiers for authors; identifiers for records (different on each system).
