Were real problems with sharing metadata across regions &#8211; political interference meant that not all regions\/libraries included.<\/p>\n<p>Wanted a &#8216;next gen&#8217; OPAC &#8211; various reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Users like mouse, not keyboard<\/li>\n<li>Surveys show satisfaction is higher than traditional OPAC &#8230; and<\/li>\n<li>We &#8216;love&#8217; New York public library&#8217;s OPAC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>W3Line developed Samarcande. From technical point of view&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High volumes of bibliographic data coming from several origins<\/li>\n<li>Create an intelligent database with FRBR scheme<\/li>\n<li>Search functionalit: advanced search, facets, tags<\/li>\n<li>Social network services (web 2.0)<\/li>\n<li>Give internal and external services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Samarcande is a catalogue of catalogues &#8211; 7 partners<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6 union catalogues<\/li>\n<li>Plus database of journal articl references<\/li>\n<li>Variety of bibliographic description<\/li>\n<li>Lack of shared rules or authorities (except for subject headings)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Totally impossible to do virtual search &#8211; have to aggregate records in an unique database.<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Detect identical references &#8211; keeping local information<\/li>\n<li>Keep the best of each reference (summaries, subject headings)<\/li>\n<li>Keep all identifiers in order to propose retun links to original catalogue<\/li>\n<li>Develop connectors to import and index the data<\/li>\n<li>Get data from web services<\/li>\n<li>Answer to SRU\/SRW requests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Includes search functionalities:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Advanced search \/ autocompletion<\/li>\n<li>Did you mean<\/li>\n<li>Results by relevance<\/li>\n<li>Facets<\/li>\n<li>Tag cloud<\/li>\n<li>Historic, reference basket, results by mail<\/li>\n<li>Search profiles, bibliographies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>FRBR<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Gather editions of the same publication<\/li>\n<li>based on author-title key as lack of any other identifier<\/li>\n<li>Social network contents attaches at the &#8216;work&#8217; level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Samarcande built on<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>mysql, jquery, php, solr<\/li>\n<li>moccam for ILL<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Belgian &#8216;meta-union&#8217; catalogue in Belgian.
