I don&#8217;t think the debate really went anywhere, but I made me think that it would be useful to write something on how computers were able to extract &#8216;meaning&#8217; from documents. This has been sitting on my notional &#8216;to-do&#8217; list that I should write a blog post on how search technology found &#8216;meaning&#8217; in documents.<br \/>\nLast week, I saw via <a href=\"http:\/\/ukwebfocus.wordpress.com\/\">Brian Kelly<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukoln.ac.uk\/ukoln\/staff\/e.tonkin\/\">Emma Tonkin<\/a> had written a report on <a href=\"http:\/\/partners.becta.org.uk\/upload-dir\/downloads\/page_documents\/research\/emerging_technologies08_chapter5.pdf\">Emerging technologies for learning<\/a>, which while not going into very much depth, has a basic introduction to this topic &#8211; well worth a read for this, and for the rest of the article which covers the &#8216;Semantic Web&#8217; and related issues.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"flockcredit\" style=\"text-align: right; color: rgb(204, 204, 204); font-size: x-small;\">Blogged with the <a title=\"Flock Browser\" target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flock.com\/blogged-with-flock\" style=\"color: rgb(153, 153, 153); font-weight: bold;\">Flock Browser<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago there was some debate on the NGC4LIB mailing list about the ability of computers to allocate subject headings given the full text of a document.
