{"id":499,"date":"2009-07-07T10:30:51","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T09:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.meanboyfriend.com\/overdue_ideas\/?p=499"},"modified":"2009-07-07T10:35:23","modified_gmt":"2009-07-07T09:35:23","slug":"mash-oop-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.meanboyfriend.com\/overdue_ideas\/2009\/07\/mash-oop-north\/","title":{"rendered":"Mash Oop North"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I&#8217;m at Mash Oop North aka #mashlib09 &#8211; and kicking off with a presentation from Dave Pattern &#8211; some very brief notes:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making Library Data Work Harder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dave Pattern &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/daveyp\/\">www.slideshare.net\/daveyp\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Keyword suggestions &#8211; about 25% of keyword searches on Huddersfield OPAC give zero results.<br \/>\nLook at what people are typing in the keyword search &#8211; Huddersfield found &#8216;renew&#8217; was a common search term &#8211; so can pop up a information box with information about renewing your books.<\/p>\n<p>By looking at common keyword combinations can help people refine their searches<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing suggestions &#8211; people who borrowed this item, also borrowed &#8230;<br \/>\nTesco&#8217;s collect and exploit this data. Do libraries sometimes assume we know what is best for our users &#8211; but we perhaps need to look at data to prove or disprove our assumptions<\/p>\n<p>Because borrowing driven by reading lists, perhaps helps suggestions stay on-topic<\/p>\n<p>Course specific &#8216;new books&#8217; list &#8211; based on what people on specific courses borrow<br \/>\nAble to do amazon-y type personalised suggestions<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing profile for Huddersfield &#8211; average number of books borrowed shows v high peak in October, lull during the summer &#8211; now can see the use of the suggestions following this with a peak in November.<\/p>\n<p>Seems to be a correlation between introduction of suggestions\/recommendations with increase in borrowing &#8211; how could this be investigated further?<\/p>\n<p>Started collecting e-journal data via SFX &#8211; starting to do journal recommendations based on usage.<\/p>\n<p>Suggested scenario &#8211; can start seeding new students experience &#8211; 1st time student accesses website can use &#8216;average&#8217; behaviour of students on same course &#8211; so highly personalised. Also, if information delivered via widgets could drag and drop to other environments.<\/p>\n<p>JISC Mosaic project, looking at usage data (at National level I think?)<\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; some ideas of stuff that you might do with usage data:<\/p>\n<p>#1 Basic library account info:<br \/>\nJust your bog standard library optionss<br \/>\n&#8211; view items on loan. hold requests etc<br \/>\n&#8211; renew items<br \/>\nConfgure alerting options<br \/>\n&#8211; SMS, Facebook, Google Teleppathy<br \/>\nConvert Karma<br \/>\n&#8211; rewards for sharing information\/contributing to pool of data &#8211; perhaps swap karma points for free services\/waiving fines etc.<\/p>\n<p>#2 Discovery service<br \/>\nSingle box for search<\/p>\n<p>#3 Book recommendations<br \/>\nStudents like book covers<br \/>\nPrimarily a &#8216;we think you might be interested in&#8217; service<br \/>\nUses database of circulation transactions, augmented with Mosaic data<br \/>\ntime relevant to the modules student is taking<br \/>\nAsapts to choices student makes over time<\/p>\n<p>#4 New books<br \/>\nData-mining of books borrowed by student on a course<br \/>\nProvide new books lists based on this information (already doing this at Huddersfield I think)<\/p>\n<p>#5 Relevant Journals<\/p>\n<p>#6 Relevant articles<br \/>\n&#8211; Whenever student interacts with library services e.g. keywords etc. &#8211; refines their profile<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I&#8217;m at Mash Oop North aka #mashlib09 &#8211; and kicking off with a presentation from Dave Pattern &#8211; some very brief notes: Making Library Data Work Harder Dave Pattern &#8211; www.slideshare.net\/daveyp\/ Keyword suggestions &#8211; about 25% of keyword searches on Huddersfield OPAC give zero results.
