{"id":87,"date":"2008-06-28T19:12:54","date_gmt":"2008-06-29T02:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.meanboyfriend.com\/overdue_ideas\/?p=87"},"modified":"2008-06-28T19:12:54","modified_gmt":"2008-06-29T02:12:54","slug":"ala-2008-merging-print-and-e-serials-workflows-the-system-suppliers-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.meanboyfriend.com\/overdue_ideas\/2008\/06\/ala-2008-merging-print-and-e-serials-workflows-the-system-suppliers-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"ALA 2008: Merging Print and E-Serials Workflows the System suppliers perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This talk by ? from III (Innovative Interfaces Inc.)<\/p>\n<p>She is starting by asking what do the workflows have in common:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Goals for staff<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Efficient and effective<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Selection and acq<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Tracking subs and renewal informatin<\/li>\n<li>Reports on cost and usage<\/li>\n<li>Managing cancellation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Makes a huge amount of sense to have cross-training.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Goals for patrons<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Efficient and effective<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Findability<\/li>\n<li>Browsability<\/li>\n<li>Availability<\/li>\n<li>Contextual linking<\/li>\n<li>Holdings information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;People do not come into a library to search, they come to find&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Patrons want what they want, they don&#8217;t care how it is held or delivered (I agree, although with some limitations &#8211; there are certain baselines that patrons want in terms of how they can use the resource I think &#8211; although these move over time &#8211; there was a point when people would use print in preference to electronic, but not now)<\/p>\n<p>Now describing some stuff about print subs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bib record for finding in OPAC<\/li>\n<li>Order record for tracking payments<\/li>\n<li>Holdings record to record retention or ownership<\/li>\n<li>Card (! I think she means virtual cards) to display receipt of individual issues<\/li>\n<li>Item records to circulate issues (at Imperial we don&#8217;t have these, and don&#8217;t circulate journal issues)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For e-subs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Resource record for fiding databases in OPAC<\/li>\n<li>License record to manage legal details<\/li>\n<li>Order record for tracking payments<\/li>\n<li>Bib record for individual titles in package<\/li>\n<li>Holdings record to show coverage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ongoing maintenance functions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitoring receipts &#8211; this is different between print and e<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Print subs<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>virtual checkin card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>E-Subs<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Coverage span (note one of the really key differences between link resolvers and traditional systems is that coverage span in resolvers is typically stored in a machine actionable format &#8211; if only this was the case for print journals things would be a lot simpler)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Libraries need to optimize patron usage by making sure that patrons are finding what the library owns&nbsp; &#8211; typically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A-Z lists of e-journals and databases<\/li>\n<li>Subject lists of e-journals and databases<\/li>\n<li>Resource records in OPAC<\/li>\n<li>OpenURL linking from citation sources<\/li>\n<li>Contextual linking from search or title records<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We need to make e-resources as visible as possible.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve lost the thread of this talk a bit &#8211; not sure where it is going&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Need to determing effectiveness of resources &#8211; is the stuff we are supplying doing any good?
